From your first glance at our sign on Mattis Avenue, we want you to feel welcome! We know it can be intimidating to visit a new church for the first time.
But we think you'll soon make friends here–we did!
The following statements sum up the basic beliefs of Mattis Avenue members.
• We take the Bible seriously as the
foundation
of faith and the standard for living for all believers.
• We believe that salvation through faith brings one into a personal relationship
with Jesus Christ.
• We encourage baptism of be-
lievers as the outward expression
of an inner change of heart.
• We celebrate holy communion on
an open basis. One need not be a member to participate.
• We seek to be filled with the Holy Spirit and to show in our lives the
fruit of the Spirit.
• We welcome all ethnic groups and both men and women into equal fellowship and full participation in the church.
• We believe we are called to bring the gospel to the poor and to work
for justice for all people.
• We are global Christians and believe God calls us to help fulfill the
Great Commission to spread the good news about Jesus throughout
the world.
Historical Note
The "free" in Free Methodist stands for freedom–freedom in worship style, freedom for the poor to worship alongside the wealthy, and freedom from slavery for all people. These are the reasons why, in 1860, a group of Methodist lay people and pastors joined together to form a new denomination and called it Free Methodist.
